What Is a Chemical Peel?

The chemical peel has been around for a minute. They’re an easy addition to any beauty routine, and a trusty go-to for a variety of skin concerns—that’s why I frequently recommend chemical peels for skin rejuvenation to clients and friends alike. I’m certain you’ve heard of chemical peels and wondered what they are.

At its most basic, a chemical peel is a facial treatment that uses a chemical solution to remove the outermost layers of your skin. Once completed and fully healed, you’ll be left with skin tone and texture improvements, and other improvements that are sure to wow.

How Chemical Peels Improve the Look and Feel of Your Skin

A professional chemical peel is a skin resurfacing treatment. A chemical peel treatment removes the top layers of skin, which are likely damaged, so that you can generate healthier, smoother skin to replace them.

Targeting Skin Texture, Tone, and Clarity

Medical-grade chemical peels are designed to rejuvenate your skin. Some of the fantastic benefits you can expect post-treatment include reduced pore size, improved skin tone and texture, and reduced fine lines and wrinkles. This is an exfoliation facial treatment that removes dead skin cells and promotes faster skin cell turnover.

Common Skin Concerns Chemical Peels Can Treat

There are many skin concerns that are addressed with the application of a medical-grade chemical peel.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

When the removal of layers of skin occurs, the skin that regrows does so with less damage. Damage contributes to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A chemical peel for wrinkles will also help stimulate collagen production as it works to heal your skin. Collagen is what skin needs more of when it starts to age and wrinkle.

Discolouration and Pigmentation

How does a chemical peel for discolouration work? By removing the top layers of skin a lot of the “glue” holding the pigmentation together gets dissolved, and you’re left with more even colouration.

Acne and Acne Scarring

A chemical peel for acne scars or a chemical peel for acne is going to work by, once again, removing the upper layers of the skin. Usually, what’s left underneath is less scarred and heals more evenly. Many acids are effective at unclogging pores. We particularly suggest multiple sessions to really target acne and scar tissue.

What to Expect During Your Chemical Peel Appointment

When you come into our clinic for your peel, we’ll start by cleansing and exfoliating your skin. After that, we apply the solution for the medical-grade chemical peel in two to three coats—how many depends on how well your skin tolerates it.

Once that’s all dry, it’s time to apply sunscreen and moisturizer, and then you’ll be on your way with instructions for appropriate aftercare!

The whole process should take about 30 minutes.

Medical-Grade Peels at Prestige Medical Aesthetics

Always do your research and ensure that the products your practitioner uses are medical grade and Health Canada approved. This applies to chemical peels as much as anything else.

Jessner Peels and Vivier Pharmaceutical-Grade Peels

We use the TX Jessner Plus peel and the Vivier Peel™, both by Vivier®, a Canadian company. They are pharmaceutical-grade peels that consistently produce wow-worthy results.

Fun fact, the TX Jessner Peel has a nearly one-hundred-year record of excellence!

Chemical Peel Aftercare: What You Need to Know

Depending on the peel used, aftercare will differ. One reason for this is that some chemical peel treatments aren’t self-neutralizing and require another step to stop the process of “peeling.”

The facial solution we apply to your skin will self-neutralize. That means all you have to do is wash your face with warm water and a gentle cleanser when the time is right (you’ll get instructions).

For real, though, sunscreen and moisturizer are essential during this phase of healing. A sunburn, or UV damage, is not going to be “the look” post-chemical peel treatment. We’ve removed the top layer of skin, so it’s fresh and tender new skin that’s exposed to the world, and it needs protection.

Showering is fine the day after your chemical peel treatment. You can use retinol and exfoliants after about a week.

Healing Time, Downtime, and Skin Care Tips

Have I mentioned how important sunscreen and moisturizer are after a facial chemical peel?

After a professional chemical peel, some people experience:

●     Breakouts

●     Irritation

●     Hyper-pigmentation

●     Redness

●     Swelling

●     Scabbing

Moisturizing adequately is a part of recovery, and can help you avoid side effects. Improper aftercare is the leading reason for side effects—which should reduce and go away with time. You may get side effects despite proper moisturizing, but the severity will differ.

It’s normal for you to have about a week of peeling and flaky skin. Your skin is shedding.

After 2 weeks, when the skin has had time to heal, that’s when you’re really going to start seeing results. It’s a process.

How Often Should You Get a Chemical Peel?

For the best results, we recommend 3 sessions of facial chemical peels.

It’s tempting to try to get that done as quickly as possible. Who wants to be patient? However, it’s recommended that you wait at least 4 weeks between each peel to allow your skin to heal.

Is a Chemical Peel Right for You?

Medical-grade chemical peels are a great addition to any beauty routine, but there are some people who shouldn’t receive them:

●     Pregnant women

●     Breastfeeding women

●     People on Accutane

●     People with inflamed acne

●     People with a recent sunburn

Of course, safe doesn’t mean “right for.” There are several concerns that medical-grade chemical peels can address, which we’ve already discussed: chemical peel for pigmentation? Yep!
